Clean Water Wednesdays – 2025

June 20, 2025 In Clean Water Wednesdays
Toilet Talk: Musings on Septic Systems, Sewers & UD Toilets (5/21/25)

Barnstable Clean Water Coalition and Cape Cod Beer have teamed up to bring you a series of free educational lectures held at the brewery. Join us as we dive deep into topics that affect not only our water on Cape Cod but also globally! #CleanWaterMatters

This month’s topic is Toilet Talk: Musings on Septic Systems, Sewers & UD Toilets.

Speakers:

  • Bryan Horsley – Project Assistant, Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC)
  • Zee Crocker – Executive Director, Barnstable Clean Water Coalition (BCWC)

What we’ll discuss:

Curious about how toilets can help save Cape Cod’s water? Join us on Wednesday, May 21st, at Cape Cod Beer for a lively and eye-opening evening exploring cutting-edge solutions to nutrient pollution.

Bryan Horsley from the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) will introduce urine-diverting (UD) toilet systems — a low-cost, eco-friendly technology designed to capture nitrogen and phosphorus before they pollute our waterways. He’ll share details about MASSTC’s upcoming pilot project and how UD toilets could be a game-changer for coastal communities.

Zee Crocker, Executive Director of the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition (BCWC), will delve into Enhanced Innovative/Alternative (EIA) septic systems and their potential to reduce nitrogen levels in our local waters significantly. Get the latest updates on the Shubael Pond EIA Project and learn how EIA systems stack up in terms of performance and cost-effectiveness.

Whether you’re a homeowner, environmentalist, or just toilet-curious, this event is for you!

Bogs to the Rescue: Cranberry Bog Restorations (6/18/25)

Barnstable Clean Water Coalition and Cape Cod Beer have teamed up to bring you a series of free educational lectures held at the brewery. Join us as we dive deep into topics that affect not only our water on Cape Cod but also globally! #CleanWaterMatters

This month’s topic is Bogs to the Rescue: Cranberry Bog Restorations

Speaker:

  • Nick Nelson, Fluvial Geomorphologist and Regional Director of Inter-Fluve

What we’ll discuss:

Join us at Cape Cod Beer on Wednesday, June 18th at 6:30 PM for an educational evening with Nick Nelson, Fluvial Geomorphologist and Regional Director of Inter-Fluve, as he explores the surprising role cranberry bogs can play in restoring Cape Cod’s water quality.

Retired cranberry bogs are more than just remnants of agricultural history—they’re a powerful opportunity to revitalize our ecosystems. By transitioning these lands into functioning wetlands and rivers, we can significantly improve water quality, enhance wildlife habitat, and create valuable recreational spaces.

Nick will explain why landowners and communities across the region are choosing restoration and share real-world examples from southeastern Massachusetts. He’ll also provide an exciting update on the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition’s Marstons Mills Bog Restoration project, showcasing images and outcomes from over 15 years of similar efforts.

Come learn how nature-based solutions are helping to clean the Cape’s waters—one bog at a time.

Cape Cod Beer will have beer, hard seltzers, seltzer cocktails & NA options available to purchase. There is no food truck on site, so please feel free to bring your own snacks.
