A potentially toxic cyanobacteria bloom has been detected in:
Cliff Pond, Nickerson State Park, Brewster
Visual evidence provided by the Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) indicates the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) cells in Cliff Pond at levels that may exceed MDPH guidelines.
Accordingly, MDPH is recommending that a cyanobacteria advisory be issued for Cliff Pond and signage be posted at all access points warning against any contact with the water.
MDPH will conduct follow-up sampling once the bloom has dissipated.
You will find the most recent sampling date and results for ponds being monitored under APCC’s cyanobacteria monitoring program on our interactive map. While we do not monitor ponds in Nickerson State Park, we have indicated this advisory on our map.
Avoid contact, particularly incidental ingestion of pond water that can occur during swimming. Dogs and children are especially susceptible to cyanotoxins through ingestion.
