Mill Pond Perched Wetland Study
Like many popular coastal areas of the
country, Cape Cod has water quality
problems. Excess nitrogen leaching into
waterways has led to eutrophication
and algae blooms in many of the Cape’s
surface waters, groundwater and
estuaries. Some species that proliferate
in nutrient-enriched waters, like bluegreen
algae, are dangerous to human
health (Dannhauser, 2018). Beaches are
often closed during blooms of these
algae species. While many species of
algae do not have dangerous humanhealth
effects, they disturb terrestrial
and estuarine ecosystems and create
aesthetic problems, like when they wash
ashore, creating decomposing, foulsmelling
mats (Dannhauser, 2018). In
short, algae is a threat both to the Cape’s
environment, quality of life, and it’s tourist
industry – and algae is directly related
to excess nitrogen concentration in the
water.
